This month Tess and the Literary Book Club are reading Vigil, by George Saunders. This novel follows an afterlife spirit named Jill “Doll” Blaine who is tasked with comforting the dying oil tycoon, K.J. Boone, who remains stubbornly unrepentant for his role in accelerating climate change. As otherworldly visitors and swarms of birds crowd his deathbed demanding a reckoning, the story explores whether empathy is possible for those who refuse to acknowledge the harm they have caused.
